My Philosophy

As a physical educator or a teacher I feel it is my role to be a motivator and provide guidance for students. It is important for students know they can achieve anything they set their minds to, and to be able to come to their teacher for support. I have to pass on my knowledge to my students, as well as guide them throughout. Guidance includes correcting them when wrong, giving them specific task so they are not set for failure, and praising them every step of the way to help build confidence.

Mini Lesson
This lesson has a required time of at least 40 minutes. I will start the class off by asking the children to tell me what they know about field hockey. I will then follow up with some questions of my own.

*Where was hockey originated from?

-Windsor, Nova Scotia

*What materials are required?

-A puck (for safety we will use a bean bag), hockey sticks, and two goals

*How is the game played?

-There are two teams that have a max of 20 players. There is one goalie for each team. Players have to use the hockey stick to hit the puck past the goalie into their opponent’s goal.

Now that the students have some background information on how hockey was originated and the rules of the game, I will now assign an activity. The activity is going to give them more knowledge of field hockey.

Lead Up Lesson

Materials:
* Two Goals
* Energetic children

Task:
This is a great exercise for the children and it allows to them to understand the game. They are learning that the puck moves all over the field non-stop, and that it takes different maneuvers to score a goal with the puck. For example, when the “hockey sticks” are chasing the “pucks” the “hockey sticks” are being faked out by them, and not allowing them to catch them. The “hockey sticks” are learning that different moves have to be done in order to catch the “puck” in order to score a goal. These are the same techniques that re required in a real game of field hockey.

Game:

To help the children get a better understanding of the game field hockey, I will set up a game of what I call Hockey Tag.

Procedure:

*In this game I will pick two students to be a “hockey stick” and two large groups will be the “pucks.”

*I will call one group at a time the “pucks” (the large group of students) will have to run all over the field, just as a real puck would be moving all over the ice.

*The “hockey stick” who is the student has to tag as many “pucks” as possible within five minutes of play.

*As each student is getting tagged they have to go sit inside of the goal. The next group of “pucks” will do the same thing and the team with the most amounts of “pucks” in the goal wins the game of Hockey Tag.

LEARNING CAN BE FUN !!!

This is a lesson for a 9-12 grade group of students

Objective:
For the students to be able to integrate their work through digital media and to learn the proper CPR procedures.

Task:
The students will be divided into two groups. One group will be about how to perform CPR and the other about finding a pulse. They will film a real scene of a person choking and perform the necessary task for their assigned procedure.

Process:
Before any filming is done a outline (storyboard) must be presented to me for approval
Websites will be assigned to the students to learn more about their topic
Both groups need to pick a director, Cameraman, actors, a editor, and a sound person
The students will be given a dummy to perform CPR, the group finding the pulse do not need a dummy.
The students are expected to create a scene that involves someone eventually choking (CPR) or fainting (pulse).
The step by step procedure must be shown in the video of how to perform CPR or checking a pulse.

Evaluation:
The students will be graded on their participation, knowledge of the procedure being shown, and creativity.

I have the potential of being an excellent teacher. I will respect my students and learn through my experience here at York College’s teacher education program, and my field work. I’m a firm believer of learning through experience and I learn every day. With that knowledge I become more of a better learner and teacher, and I want to pass it on to others. It is important for children to be taught by those who truly enjoy teaching because after all children are the future. A positive future is what I want to push for in all students.
